#29 stand up – your sign to perform

I found myself watching these videos of people failing/falling and there are always three factors to this. First there is always someone who is doing something, there is someone filming the person doing something and then there is you.

The doer. The doer is the one who is putting themselves out there to be seen, and in this case recorded for the delight of others or maybe for they think they have something to add, maybe for the fame and notieriety gets them off and they feel like by doing this thing, knowing they are being video taped they will somehow make their lives and the lives aroudn them better. Now for the rest of them, the second group of watchers. The watchers make up most of the population, someone who belives themselves to be too shy, or careful, or potentially smarter than the doer who would never be caught in that situaton.

The only thing I have to say is do it; don’t wait; go for it; make your mark whether your face in the concrete whether it be wet, or dry.

#28 what is your sacrifice

The armchair enthusiast in all of us is exceptional at picking apart the actions of other people and we all develop at different rates, your experience is different than anyone elses, and why would you want it to be the same. There are only a few jobs that require commitment from you that is at a different level to that of an ordrinary job. And I am saying that an ordinary job is one where you log out, shut your laptop screen, turn off the monitor and sign off for the day and there is no expectation that you do anything productive in the way of contributing to the success of your business.

1) Entrepreneurship. Now this is small for the most part but if you are an entrepreneur there is a specific amount of hustle that is required from you to ensure that you have a livelihood. The unguaranteed paycheque is a constant cause for pressure and will likely seep into the rest of your life whether you like it or not.

2) Athletics. There is a huge committment and a toll on the rest of your life when you chose to live a life of athletics. Even if you do work for a “company” as a professional athlete for a large team, the requirement to travel, play, recover, all takes its toll on you physically and mentally nevermind your family.

3) Military memebers. Finally there is your miltiary member, who sacrifies a lot and is expected to, at the end of the day walk into the darkness if required to do so, as a part of their job. Thrilling to me, but not seen, understood, or appreciated the job of a military member is optimally all three, a huge impact on their families no doubt. Shake their hands say thanks.

#27 make time, all of your time is your own

The world is designed to ensure that your time is occupied. Much of what you do on a day to day basis is keeping yourself busy. I can speak from my own experience on this fact. When I was young and my mind had a few less cracks in it than it does now I would turn to breaking things, for fun. The physical act of breaking something and the consequences of that act, realized immediately or in a few days time felt great. Although probably not always intentional and probably a sign of larger issues all of this was done as a way to occupy my time. We are all skilled and professional time wasters, how do we overcome this.

1) Start with the things you don’t want to do. There are things we put off because we would rather not. Think of the pile of dishes on your sink, or the counter. Think of the laundry basket or the garage. There is always and will always be the pile of books you meant to read on the shelf or next to your bed waiting for the right time. In all cases you are putting these things off because you dont and wont recognize the immediate benefit of these things. You trap yourself in unfinished projects because the satisfaction of a finished project provides a different emotional reaction, one that permits the start of a new project, very different than having many threads dangling in the air instead of tying one knot before moving onto the next.

2) Say no, there has been nothing more damaging to my social life than saying no. I am sure I have missed countless opportunities to be social, or to become a different person by saying yes to things. However tehere is not much more time that I cherish than being able to reflect on my own abilties, skills and challenges without the added social influence of having other people assess my mistakes on my behalf. Take the time to yourself that you need to grow as a person, you will earn this right at some point because you will eventually be alone. Do no fill your time with things you would rather not do. Say no.

3) Break things. I have a colleague who feels like they are hated, specificially because they are making more work for their superiors with the actions they are taking to make sure that their subordinates are well looked after, in some cases by saving the day at the lowest level has earned them a nasty reputation at the higher eschelons because it is not the way that things are typically done. I can say, break things, be extra ordinary, and make sure that people feel your wake as you appraoch, and pass and after you pass. They will be upset and their worlds may turn, but dont be a dingy, be a massive ship that respects the speed limit when it must but in the open ocean does not, look back.

#26 overperform and overdeliver

You are at a constant battle with yourself to be at a state of homeostasis, your body and your mind do not like it when you are thrown too far out of your “comfort zone” so they will do anything they possibly can to make sure that you stay within the zone where you are comfortable, with the least stress, and at the mercy of the least judgement. Here are several tactics you must take to ensure that you are living to your potential.

First, address the fact that you don not know it all, you know nothing, and that there is only learning to be had. For example in the world of science, and space there is continual learning and the dismissal of old theorems in favor of the new. Your biology is no different, you need water, food and sunshine, learn the rest and most importantly be open to perform the learning, your mind is constantly dumping information that you don’t need and I mean constantly. Ensure that your mind is open to learning what it needs to be learning and dump information that it does not need.

Constantly push your boundaries, expand your learned experience whether this means by books, or courses and classes on specific topics there is an endless amount to be learned, become the best you can be at that particular model and make sure you are pushing the boundaries of your new learning. Expose yourself to the people, products, effectst that you are after so that you are best able to impliment the knowledge that you took on board.

Once you have learned something new, immediately put it into use if you expect to keep a handle on it. The reason that you don’t remember how to do calculus from school, or write in perfect English prose is because you have not been using the skills that you developed from those periods regularly enough for you to be effective at them. Use the skills you learn, you wont forget to put the eggs in the scrambled eggs but you might forget your keys on the counter when leaving the house, make the experience of learning compelling and fulfilling to make sure that it sticks.

#25 three things you must do for extreme success

It is really easy to give up. We have all heard that before and seen its effect in our lives here are a few things you should do to not give up and force yourself into success.

First you must realize that the road to success is long and most people run out of gas or get off at an exit before realizing the final destination. There are constantly distractions that take your eyes off the prize, the world has been designed to vie for your attention and make sure you are seeing what it wants you to see instead of allowing for your focused attention to enable your extreme success.

If you decide to take an exit you may still be wildly successful. Like a tree branching in all directions the worlds highway has a huge amount of opportunities at every gate, you will struggle however the perseverance down your particular road will be what makes you successful. Chose a path and do not look back, there is nothing there for you to see.

Details matter more than generalities, are you able to throw around your weight for an effect or do you permit yourself to have a small sphere of influence due to fear? There is not much that you can do if you do not believe yourself able to do it. Focus on the details. When is the last time you made sure that you labeled every one of your possessions, If I asked you if you knew where each of your belongings was would you be able to tell me? You would be surprised and I know the answer is no.

Keep fighting the good fight, and deliver.

#24 Five things to do when you fail.

Failure visits you when you want it to or not. Here are five steps to take when you’ve failed. Larger life failures seem to carry a big weight on us I’ve recently had a big mis step and it’s caused a lot of stress. What’s one yo do?

  1. Turn off your brain. The first think you have to do especially if you fail at something that’s been extremely successful like a project at work that has been months in the progress or a submission that did not pan out the way you intended. Is take a step back. You will surely be angry or sad or some sort of emotion. Not dwelling on the failure will allow you to process the information.
  2. Log off. If you are able to take yourself out of the failure situation then do it. If it is at work take some days off or school do the same take it easy let the feeling sink in and help re fill the reservoir you’ve expended on the project.
  3. Network. Most of your friends have failed at something or your family seek your support network and bounce as much as you can off of them see what they have to say about what you’re doing and what they think you can do.
  4. Assess. So youve taken a step back and turned off the thought process about the failure. Re start that thing on your shoulders assess what direction you need to take to move forward. Is that the right direction or were you taken off course for a reason big or small?
  5. Re attack. Because youre virile get back on the horse and attack attack a new project or maybe you’ve learned enough from your mistakes to try again. Crack on.

#23 the movement class lesson five – back pain

Hey, look behind you, no not behind you, behind-you. When you think of your back do you think of an impressive set of shoulders or maybe your latissimus muscles, your butt? Well, you’re all right but this surprisingly complicated area of the human body is interesting. He’s made it easy with this one and broken down the muscles in the back into three;

The superficial group, which holds the trapezius, latissimus dorsi, rhomboid minor and levator scapulae. The intermediate group known as the respiratory group is a combination of serratus muscles and the deep group which are all of the wildly useful muscles that control and balance the movement of your spine.

The multitude of systems that are present in the back provide support to the head and thorax, and the ribs which are attached to the back. So before you reach for your ibuprofen and decide that your back hurts too much to do x and y, keep reading.

  1. Pull it, In my experience there is no better cure for back pain than prevention. A strong and healthy back will get you through the hard times and will ensure that you remain healthy for a long time. The back responds to pulling thing, so pull yourself up, pull something up, or pull yourself through the water and develop the muscles that keep your spine safe.
  2. Twist, the spine is not necessarily meant to twist and I don’t advise you to watch one youtube video and become a yogi but putting your body through the paces with regular movement supporting your back in less than regular movements, will be best. A burpee is tremendous, next time try two.
  3. Get up, there isn’t a practice more regulating than walking, I understand you are probably reading this and you are either on the subway looking down, or on your computer looking down, you’ll never see that goose coming… Walking chest out and take up space, look up and balance your spine on your pelvis like you are holding an egg with a spoon, notice the torque in places it should not be and stretch.

You’ve got this, the pain of failure defeats never trying at all.

#22 Disobedient subordinates

I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of people at this point in my career, and all have relativelty been the same person. They each look at one another to establish the standards for themselves, they try their best not to stand out, and all secretly hate themselves. Meet three employees and how to deal with each one of them here.

1. Testing you. If your subordinates are trying to get under your skin by not doing what you ask from them, or managing to do the bare minimum to get by you are probably being tested. It is up to you to decide how you will treat the situation that is facing you in the form of disobedient subordinates. Your reaction or in-action will both be taken personally, be recieved negativley and will potentially benefit the institutuion, otherwise that employee might just quit. However, as a leader you must do something.

2. They are bored and can handle more responsibility. The second type of disobedience stems from boredom, and I think I fall into this category. However bored employees can be just as dangerous as the lazy. They will find discontent where there wasnt any and they will sow seeds that you will find later after they have passed your managment. Keep these employees fed and watered give them more work than they can handle, they will hate you for it, but they will appreciate you for the opportunity.

3. The outright no. There are people who I have worked with who simply do not give a shit about the company, or their peers, or their own selves they show up because they have an obligation that they cannot get out of and they have to pay for something because that is where they are in their lives. These employees are not dangerous, but they are not productive and if you can pay someone else to do their job better, faster, and be an active member of your team, take the plunge and find a role for them where they drive themselves up the wall until they are ready to play.

#21 the movement class lesson four

This time, its your spine.

Last class we discussed the importance of maintaining your core and what it means to have a strong core and the life impacts that having a strong core has overall. Today we’ll discuss your spine and how fueling your spine will have an impact on your life.

  1. Predatory movement, Think about the motion of a shark swimming, or the dynamic movement performed by a predatory cat mid hunt. You should not remove yourself from these predatory motions, but that is all we do, we sit in unnatural positions at desks stretching out our lower spine leaving it stationary for hours on end expecting it to perform when we ask it to.
A predators spine is healthy and resilient

2. Our bodies will become good at what we ask from them, so if you ask your body to sit at a desk for long periods of time it will become sore, at first, to challenge itself and then once it realizes that this is normal now you will remain in that position, when standing, and when operating as a human. Diversify your movement; don’t let your body think that sitting, hunched over a computer, is normal.

3. Your spinal column is organized to send information from your brain to the rest of your body using that thing sitting at the top. If you neglect the attachments, like an under used peripheral on your computer your spine will react, whether it be pain or worse. You must keep your spine in action and if you are ever wondering what is possible look at the flexibility of top performing humans at the Olympics and see, your range of motion sucks and it all starts from your spine.

I think I’ll revisit the spine because I am not done with its utility, this was mostly based on spinal health but I think that mental health can be tied to the spine as well.

#20 “Just turn it off and turn it on again”

Three steps to press your body’s reset button.

Wouldn’t it be something if you could “turn off” and turn back again, resetting all your settings, clearing all your memory and becoming ready for whatever tasks that you’re exposed to on a daily basis. What a great idea, unfortunately that’s not going to happen. Here are three steps you need to take to reset your body and mind and start on the newest freshest page of your life book.

  1. Sleep. The best and only real medicine is when you allow yourself to recover deeply and fully with sleep. After a period of intensive work, whether it being a long string of late shifts or a week of extra difficult workouts the chemicals in your body and mind will be exceptionally damaged, you can overcome this with sleep, and enough of it in the right conditions, we know all the factors that affect sleep so don’t be stupid and curse your sleep by drinking and sleeping longer, it wont help you in fact it will put you farther behind your goals.
  2. Exercise. Strong mind, strong body, ah the old adage rings true today. The physiological benefits to being fit contribute to general health and ensure that all circulatory systems are in check (and lymphatic and cardiovascular blah). Think of rinsing a straw before you use it, the longer you go between washes the more junk you might find in that straw, naturally accumulating.
  3. Exhaustion. It might be controversial to think that you need to exhaust yourself, but you do, your bodies love being in a steady state (homeostasis) so your body will have no issues, in fact it wants you, to become a couch-bound television, video game, etc. addict, it is predictable, your body does not have to react to things that trigger flight or fight and you are in a very comfortable position for a long time. Exhaust yourself with work, or study or exercise somewhat regularly, allow yourself to fall on the other side of exhaustion, but always remember to hit the reset, with sleep and exercise.
